One of the common questions many people have when considering Brick Slips is whether it’s still possible to fix to a Brick Slip wall.
From kitchen cabinets to mirrors and even bathroom fittings, if you have a Brick Slip wall then you are going to need to know how to fix items to the wall correctly. What this means is that you need to make sure that everything is fitted right because anything that is loose might fall off and that could damage your Brick Slips too.
When it comes to putting up fixtures on walls where Brick Slips are fitted to plasterboard, the main thing to consider is the thickness of the Brick Slips and the plasterboard combined. Brick Slips range from 15mm to 20mm and you will also need to consider the adhesive bed thickness as well as the thickness of the plasterboard which is on average around 12.5mm, all of which could mean that the total thickness is around 37mm.
Prior to hanging or fixing any items to the wall, you must make sure that the wall is structurally sound. If you are fixing onto an interior or exterior wall that is made of brick or block then its possible to fix through the Brick Slips and into the brick or block work. If the internal wall is a stud wall that has been Brick Slipped then you will need to make sure that it is structurally sound which means the right bracing and partitions.
If the wall is solid masonry then you’re in luck as this is one of the simplest to manage. Starting with the right sized masonry drill bit, you can drill a hole through the mortar joint in the brick slip facade and then into the masonry. You can then use wall plugs or nylon anchor fixings to hang your desired item.
Plasterboard walls are slightly different as there is often a cavity behind them which means that the fixing needs to be right. Therefore, you should consider using spring toggle fixings, drywall plugs or wall anchors. The aim is to ensure that your fixtures have enough support as this will ensure that the right support is in place. Remember to make sure that you use a screw that is long enough to achieve the right support.
This is considered to be one of the easiest of all when it comes to fixing through Brick Slips. Commonly, sheet timber is often found in loft conversions and so, it is important to remember that the timber should be a minimum of 18mm in thickness. This will ensure that you can achieve the perfect fix although this is not always possible as the timber is sometimes thinner. Should the timber be less than 9mm in thickness then you should consider using a spring or anchor fixing. However, you should make sure that the wall is structurally sound before you begin undertaking any work.
There is no denying that Brick Slips make for the perfect feature wall or as a replacement for a kitchen splashback. However, there are times when you will need to hang fixings on these walls so it helps to know how to achieve this. The main thing to consider is how structurally sound the walls are. If they are right then you can use the right fittings and fix a whole range of items to your walls with confidence.
