If you have decided that you are going to install brick slips in or, outside your home then it makes perfect sense to ensure you have everything you need to make the install as easy as possible. The last thing you want is to begin your installation only to find that you don’t have the right tools and equipment. We know that installing brick slips is not a difficult task but it is one that takes time and planning to get that perfect end result.
For many of us, DIY is something that we find easy but for others, taking their time and ensuring everything is in place is vital. Therefore, we have created the ideal list of what you need to install brick slips.
If you have carried out tiling jobs previously then this kind of job will be a simple one for you. However, there is a process when it comes to installing brick slips.
The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that you remove all dust from your wall and make sure that it can hold the weight of the brick tiles, so loose plaster or brickwork will need to be repaired.
For any surface that is porous, which means that it will soak up moisture, you will need to use a PVA bond sealer as this will prevent the surface from taking moisture out of the adhesive.
For painted walls we advise scribing the walls before installing Brick Slips. This ensures the adhesive penetrates further than just the paint its self.
If you have a large number of brick slips and a large number of boxes then you should work from multiple boxes as this will make sure that you have a natural finish. Many installers will also mark a line on the wall for every four courses, working up the wall. This will ensure that you have a guide to follow.
You might find that the back of the brick slip, which is the part that you place on the wall, is covered with dust. If so, you will need to make sure that the dust and debris is removed using a steel wire brush. Once you have fitted the brick slips to the wall, we recommend that you leave them to dry for 48 hours before you begin pointing. When you get to the stage of pointing, make sure you mix your product in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. You can then use a mortar pointing gun or a trowel and jointer which you will need to work across the wall and upwards. Once you have finished pointing and jointing and the mortar has cured, you can then give the Brick Tiles a brush with the steel wire brush as this will help to remove any loose debris.
At this point, you can then decide whether you want to seal your brick slips or not as this will help to retain their look and protect them at the same time.
