What are the best DVDs about construction?

Strange question you may ask but there are some!

The hit TV show Friends may not be construction based but their favourite coffee shop Central Perk which seems to feature Brickslips!

There are more DVDs themed around construction than you might think. Many inspiring and thought-provoking titles based around architecture and construction have been made over the years, and plenty of them are available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Let’s take a look at ten popular movies and documentaries about construction right now.

Fred Dibnah’s Great Buildings

This DVD features three programmes about some of the most prestigious and impressive houses, castles and churches in the UK. Episodes fronted by late steeplejack Fred Dibnah include ‘Castle Builders’, ‘Master Builders’ and ‘Ship Builders’. Dibhah was well known for his interest in mechanical engineering and was born at a time when Britain’s growth was heavily reliant on coal. He passed away at the age of 66 at the age of 2004.

Dan Cruickshank’s Adventures in Architecture

Adventures in Architecture sees Dan Cruikshank travelling the world to look at a diverse range of buildings in countries ranging from Egypt to Russia.

Kings of Construction

This DVD consists of three Discovery channel programmes taking a look at the Gotthard base tunnel, Hong Kong’s Ngong Ping cable car and the world’s biggest artificial ski slope in Dubai.

The Bridge on the River Kwai

This classic movie is set during WWII and tells the story of how British prisoners of war constructed a bridge over Thailand’s Kwai River. The movie stars the iconic Alec McGuinness and won seven Oscars.

The Great Escape

The Great Escape is another classic movie in which Allied soldiers build tunnels to help prisoners of war escape a camp during WWII. The film is based on real-life events. 76 prisoners out of the planned 220 were able to make their escape via the tunnels, with 73 being recaptured.

Four With Betjeman – Victorian Architects and Architecture

This four-part series fronted by the late Sir John Betjeman explores the Gothic architecture era and looks at iconic constructions including Westminster Abbey, the Natural History Museum, the Houses of Parliament, the Albert Memorial and various country houses.

World’s Greatest Ships (The Complete Channel 5 Series)

This Rob Bell-fronted series takes a detailed look at famous constructions like the Cutty Sark, the Mary Rose, SS Great Britain, The Golden Hinde, HMV Victory and HMV Belfast.

This Swedish documentary looks at various grand architectural projects of our time and follows their journey from their original inception right through to their completion.

Architectures

This 11-volume box set focuses on the work of leading architects including Otto Wagner, Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Libeskind, Jean Prouve, Adalberto Libera and Andrea Palladio. The box set features a stunning 60 different films on architecture and construction.

A Master Builder

This US drama is based on Henrik Ibsen’s play and sees a dying architect dealing with the many mistakes he has made throughout his life during his final hours. A Master Builder focuses on the way he has mistreated his employees and his wife over the years before he finally finds redemption.

There are many interesting titles available to you if you’re ready to find out more about the long and fascinating history of construction and architecture. It seems these themes will be continue to be documented on screen long into the future.
